Apart of Me is a game designed by psychologists especially tailored for children who are experiencing grief as a result of a death, an illness, or other hard to process circumstances. The user plays a humanoid character who travels in an air balloon to a magical and peaceful world. There, they learn that they can train to become a Guide, someone who helps others deal with their difficult emotions. In order to do this, they need to go on certain quests that involve processing their own emotions related to loss or grief. These quests are journaling activities where the user is given a prompt and asked to respond to it, sometimes with help from another person.
There are other characters on the island who interact with you and give you items, including journals that were created by real bereaved people. You can take these to your cave and listen to them at your leisure. Each journal has a detailed story about the person who was lost, what they were like, and how the person left behind has gone through the healing process.
Other parts of the island such as the Rock Pool allow for guided breathing exercises. The Guide’s hut also contains a bulletin board that, when clicked on, provides real-world services the user can access to process their grief in the real world. Different colored fireflies can also be caught, each representing a different emotion surrounding the loss of a loved one. Once caught, the user can walk through why feeling that emotion is perfectly ok and what to do with that particular feeling.
Apart of Me is free to download for Android and iOS.
Self Awareness: Understanding our own actions, thoughts and feelings.
Children who are experiencing grief may not understand all of the emotions that accompany a tragic event. The game Apart of Me helps by giving names to these emotions, defining them in simple ways, and providing examples of actions that might be associated with them. The game also talks about listening to yourself and becoming aware of these feelings in order to process them. For children who have a hard time connecting with their own feelings under any circumstances might find that this game allows them to put a name to what they are thinking and doing, especially during or after a traumatic event.
Self Control: Managing our actions, feelings and behaviors.
Apart of Me works with the user to not only understand their feelings, but to address them as well. Modeling of this is demonstrated in the journals of other children and their stories; each one of them talks about how they learned to process and deal with their emotions after losing a friend or family member. There are also specific places on the imaginary island, such as your cave and the rock pool where you can go to “be alone” and practice mindful breathing.
Encountering the other characters on the island also reveals to the user how other grief can be processed in other cultures and religions, offering a wide range of perspectives.
