Lifeline: Silent Night is a text-based mobile Choose Your Own Adventure story that uses push notifications on your mobile device as “transmissions” from the characters in the game. Lifeline: Silent Night is a continuation of the original story told in the Lifeline mobile game. In this sequel, Taylor, the protagonist of the first game, has just been rescued from a desolate moon filled with body-snatching alien creatures. He is now aboard a mining ship with a limited crew and waiting to return home. However, trouble soon strikes and Taylor is once again thrown into a chaotic and dangerous situation. Taylor “communicates” with the player over an audio system that translates their words into text. This means that the player receives messages either through the game or via push notifications on their mobile device (this can be disabled as well).
Occasionally, Taylor will ask you for your advice on how to proceed. This will show up on screen as two buttons with different choices. The player then needs to decide what action they think Taylor should take and click on that option with their finger. Taylor will then take that action and the story will either continue to unfold or Taylor will be disconnected from you, essentially meaning the game is over and you need to try again. Because the game is a Choose Your Own Adventure game, you will be allowed to go back to certain decisions and re-do them to see the changes it has on the overall plot.
Lifeline: Silent Night is available for purchase on iOS and Android.
Working Memory: Recalling and retaining information in our minds while working.
There is a lot of text-based information being given to the player in Lifeline: Silent Night. The player needs to use their working memory skills to recall this information when helping Taylor to make decisions. The player is able to scroll back through previous transmissions but this is time consuming and as the story gets longer might lead to frustration. Remembering the names of characters, the areas of the ship, and the major plot points of the story will help the player make the best possible decisions to get Taylor out of the situation alive.
Self-Awareness: Understanding our own actions, thoughts and feelings.
Self-Awareness skills are also important in this game because the player is roleplaying as a person who is trying to help another person survive in an impossible situation. The player can think about how they would actually handle the situation in real life and how they would feel if they were Taylor trapped aboard the ship overrun with aliens. Sometimes the player will be faced with two decisions where one is the safest option for Taylor while other times the choices will be more ambiguous. The player needs to really think about the advice they are giving and be willing to try again if that advice ends up cutting off Taylor’’s transmissions.
