Reigns is a game where the player takes on the role of a king making decisions in order to stay on the throne. The player begins the game as a newly crowned king who immediately needs to start making decisions. Cards will appear on the screen and the player swipes slowly to the right or to the left on the screen to see what their two decision options are. Once they have made their choice, they simply swipe or click in that direction to make the choice. At the top of the screen, there are four icons representing the various types of favor you need to curry within the kingdom. Choices will raise or lower this favor depending on what kind decision you made as king. If the levels on these icons get too high or two low, the player will lose the game and the king will be dethroned in various ways, ranging from peaceful to painful. A new king will then assume the throne and the player will have the chance to begin again. Players can also invest in certain kingdom attributes such as fortifications and barns in order to save themselves from death when your scores drop too low.

At the beginning of each king’s reign, there are certain objectives that the player needs to try and meet. The choices that the player makes can lead them to achieve these objectives or miss them entirely.

Reigns  is available for purchase on iOS, Android, Nintendo Switch, and Steam.

Reigns helps kids practice and improve the following skills:

Planning: Developing a systematic approach for setting and achieving goals.

In order to have the longest reign possible for each of your kings, the player needs to use their planning skills effectively. Each decision made by the player will have an effect on the levels of satisfaction or dissatisfaction that the people have with your job. Players need to look at these levels and make decisions that will allow them to remain in power, even if it is not the decision they might have wanted to make.

Players also need to use planning when they are trying to complete the objectives that were set out for them at the beginning of the king’s reign. If one of your objectives is to have an heir, you need to plan to make decisions that will lead you to marrying a queen and having a child. Or if you need to reign for 60 years, you need to make sure that you are making decisions that will set you up for a much longer ruling period.

Focus: Getting started and then maintaining attention and effort to tasks.

Players need to use their focus skills and pay attention to the events in each round of play with each king. Some of the events that take place will travel from king to king, meaning that they will have an effect on the different storylines even after that king is dead. Players also need to be able to use their focus when reading. Reigns is a text-based game with no intelligible voice acting so the player needs to be able to read and understand the information on screen in order to make good in-game decisions.
