Summer of Memories is a narrative game where you play a small boy sent to his aunt and uncle’s home for summer vacation. Sosuke, a kid from Tokyo, goes to a small seaside village to spend his summer holiday after his mother says she needs some time to herself. Sosuke has stopped going to school and seems sad about everything. He doesn’t know the relatives he is staying with and is confused about why his mother sent him away. The player packs a bag for Sosuke every morning so he can go out and explore the island. There he will encounter new sights, new people, and learn more about his family and their history.
Players earn money by helping customers at the small family store. The money can be used to purchase various items Sosuke needs to explore, such as food, ferry tickets, sandals, and bug nets. As he finds items and builds up a collection, Sosuke can open up new opportunities for conversation with other characters on the island.
Self Awareness: Understanding our own actions, thoughts and feelings.
Summer of Memories deals with many different emotional issues such as loss, resentment, loneliness, and regret. Sosuke feels some of these emotions, while others are expressed by the characters around him. As he processes his own feelings about his family, the player also has a chance to reflect on their own feelings and experiences. This deepens the response to the game by developing empathy for the characters when they are facing difficulty, hardships, or even the pain of old memories. However, the player also gets to celebrate the small moments with Sosuke and his family as well, sharing in their joy and connecting it with pleasant memories of their own.
Planning: Developing a systematic approach for setting and achieving goals.
Summer of Memories takes Sosuke through his 31 days of summer vacation. When you reach the 31st day, his vacation is over and the game ends. This means that the player needs to try and have as many experiences as possible within the timeframe of the game. Planning out what to pack in Sosuke’s backpack each day will determine where he goes and what kind of encounters he has. For people who struggle with planning, trying to make sure that Sosuke has at least one type of food, one item, and one special item will ensure that he branches out for new adventures.
