Otter Ocean is a game where the player rescues a group of otters after a hurricane and works together with them to clean the ocean and find more of their lost friends. The player starts with one otter, who then dives to find garbage, shells, and even other otters. When the otters dive, they get hungry and need to be fed. The player needs to keep track of each otter’s hunger status as well as what types of food they like best. The shells you find can be used to purchase things the otters need such as food, medicine, and sponges to clean off with. As the otters find more of their friends, the player can send them to dive in multiple locations, bringing back even more shells, treasure, and otters. Completing various quests and putting items back together that you find pieces for will also earn you more shells.
While Otter Ocean is appropriate for children four and up, there is a fair amount of text that will require some assistance if the child playing is just learning to read.
Otter Ocean is a free-to-play game but in-app purchases are available. It is currently available for Android and iOS.
Organization: Arranging and coordinating materials in order to complete a task.
Each otter in the game has a favorite food and a different level of hunger. Every time you send an otter on a dive, it will come back hungry. Also, occasionally an otter will get sick or come back filthy and need a bath. The food, medicine, and sponges need to be purchased by the player using the shells they earn from each dive. The player needs to use their organization skills to make sure that they have enough of each type of food as well as medicine and sponges for when they are needed. Not every type of food that each otter prefers is always available, so players need to check in to the store frequently and build up a supply of all the foods available.
Planning: Developing a systematic approach for setting and achieving goals.
Each otter in the game comes with specific hunger requirements and food preferences. They can also get dirty and sick which requires the player to give them baths and medicine. The player needs to have a plan for purchasing these items and earning enough shells from diving to pay for everything. The otters favorite foods can fill up more of their hunger bar, but others will only fill up a small amount. So the player needs to have a plan to distribute the food to the otters who like it the most. This gets harder as the game progresses and you have multiple otters who all require different things.
