Mr. Crab 2 combines running and jumping and is done mostly on a path that rises and curves in a spiral. The player controls Mr. Crab as he avoids creatures, jumps from platform to platform, and also saves (and collects) a variety of baby crabs (over 400). The game comes with 9 easy levels and 4 medium levels. The player can also unlock several easy and medium levels as prizes in an in-game vending machine.
There is also an in-app purchase available to unlock additional easy, medium, and hard levels. The game got an E for Everything rating and LW4K stands by this rating.
Mr. Crab 2 helps kids practice and improve the following skills:
Getting started and then maintaining attention and effort to tasks.
Mr. Crab 2 has three goals: collecting stars (which can buy gifts from the vending machine), collecting baby crabs, and avoiding other creatures (such as spiders and puffer fish). There are also various types of platforms (swings and elevators for example), tunnels, and walls. Some walls will turn Mr. Crab the other direction and others will block him from going back to get something he missed. To be successful at this game, the player will need to be able to shift their attention between all of these tasks. If the player is only focusing on collecting stars, for examples, they won't notice the baby crabs and will fail to rescue them. If the player doesn't pay attention to upcoming walls, they may find themselves separated from stars and baby crabs. To be successful at all goals, in other words, the player must be able to shift their attention between multiple tasks.
Developing a systematic approach for setting and achieving goals.
While Mr. Crab 2 is a fast paced game, it still requires the player to be able to use their problem solving skills. Baby crabs are not always in the direct path of Mr. Crab. In order to save them all, the player must be able to locate them and then identify the correct path to reach them. This may mean that they have to bounce off a wall to switch direction or jump on top of a tunnel before entering it. If they cannot use their planning skills to solve the problem of reaching the missing baby crabs, they will not be able to unlock the next level or collect the stars needed to unlock gifts in the vending machine.
