Defense Grid: The Awakening is a tower-defense game that tasks the player with strategically placing 10 different types of towers around a battlefield in an effort to stop an invading force from stealing his “power cores.” Each tower uses different tactics to defeat enemies, like towers that use machine guns, fire ballistic missiles, or simply improve other nearby towers. There are 20 levels to complete, with the enemies getting tougher and more complex as the game progresses. Thankfully, the player can also upgrade his units, crafting more powerful towers to take on harder enemies. The game features a moderate amount of military violence and requires some light reading, so it is only recommended to ages 10 and up.

This Game is Good for Kids Who Need Help With:

Planning

Developing a systematic approach for setting and achieving goals.

This game requires the player to use good Planning skills to build up a strong defense and keep a storming band of invaders from defeating his forces. The player chooses where to place each tower before battle, and therefore has to anticipate the places where they will be most effective. This strategy requires him to estimate when the enemy will be most susceptible to attacks, and deduce which attacks should be used at those points. Furthermore, the player can upgrade his towers and buy new types of towers to augment his attack powers and abilities. Doing so requires saving up currency, and unplanned spending that hasn't been carefully thought out can prove disastrous.

Organization

Arranging and coordinating materials in order to complete a task.

Defense Grid: The Awakening requires good Organization skills in order to intelligently and efficiently place the different towers in the game. Considering there are ten different tower types to choose from, function and placement of the towers are critical factors for success. Some towers are better at defending waves of enemies but are ineffective against specific individual aliens, for example, and so the player must arrange towers by type, taking their positions and usage into careful consideration. Randomly dropping whatever type of tower anywhere is wasteful of resources, and a messy or unorganized defensive layout will quickly lead to failure. Enemies become stronger and levels get more complex as the game goes on, which will further test the strength of the player's defense. By putting his knowledge of each tower's unique capabilities to use, the player can arrange a well-balanced defense that safeguards the power cores.
