Snapimals is a fun museum-building game. The player has to go on safari’s to take and collect pictures of various animals to earn money and fulfill quests. The tutorial takes the player through the first several levels. It does a good job of showing how to get customers and how to take pictures, as well as how to improve the museum.
As the player takes more pictures and upgrades the museum to higher levels, he or she is able to visit more environments and discover more animals. Each animal has a list of specific pictures the “Captain” is looking for. The closer the player’s picture is to matching what the Captain is looking for, the more money the player earns. The player can also earn money for other pictures by selling them as postcards or using them to complete quests.
There are in-game purchases. The ESRB rated Snapimals E for Everyone and LW4K stands by this rating.
Snapimals helps kids practice and improve the following skills:
Understanding our own actions, thoughts and feelings.
Snapimals has two limited resources (film and coin) that are necessary for the player to advance the game. Because of this, the player has the opportunity to practice their self-control skills. Impulse control and thinking about the future is necessary to keep them from using up all of their film on the first one or two animals that they see. If they snap those pictures too early, they could end up missing a rare animal or one of the specific poses Captain wants for the museum. The same is true of money. If they spend it on the wrong item at the wrong time, the player's progress in the game will be dramatically slowed.
Recalling and retaining information in our minds while working.
Because the game relies on specific orders for specific pictures--either through the museum or through quests--Snapimals is an excellent game for practicing working memory skills. The player must follow directions and work on diminishing forgetfulness in order to complete quests. Once the player is on "tour" he or she will have to remember what photo requests are in the quest list. There is no way to look them up until the tour is over. The player must also have a strong visual memory in order to remember what poses Captain has requested for each specific animal. If the player does not use their working memory skills, they will build money slowly and even stall out in the game completely.
