Summation is a math puzzle game. The player receives a game board of various addition problems and enough number bubbles to complete the equations. In order to solve the problems, the number bubbles must be moved around until all the problems are correct. There is an endless mode with 100 levels, as well as a timed challenge mode. As of August 2017, the game is available for iOS devices, with an Android version in the Google Play store, but currently listed as “unreleased”. The app got an E for Everyone rating. LW4K recommends this game for ages 10 and up due to the complicated nature of later levels.

Summation helps kids practice and improve the following skills:

SummationOrganization

Arranging and coordinating materials in order to complete a task.

Summation requires that the player be able to organize and rearrange the numbers. This means that it is great practice for the player to work on organizing ideas. To be successful at the game, the player must be able to consider multiple options for each equation. They must also be able to remember the options they have considered and choose the best one. It is even possible that they will have all the equations completed except one, only to discover that they have to start over. Being able to keep their thoughts in order is required for players to be able to complete each level. If they do not, they will quickly find themselves stuck and unable to advance further in the game.

Planning

Developing a systematic approach for setting and achieving goals.

As a math based game, Summation is based entirely on the principle of solving problems. That means that the player will be practicing their cognitive planning skills with every switch of numbers and every level completed. If they do not have a methodical plan in place, they will be unable to solve more than a few levels of the game.

Math

Since Summation is a math based game, players will most definitely be getting every opportunity to practice their math based skills. While the game is based on basic addition, the further the game progresses, the more advanced the addition problems become. Some equations will have more than two numbers and the level as a whole will have more equations to balance and correct. Even older players, with a firm grasp on addition, will find levels that challenge them.
