Game Dev Story is an idle game where the player is running their own game development studio. The player creates their own gaming company, hires and fires employees, develops games and consoles, and markets their products in an attempt to earn more money and awards.
The player starts out in a small studio with a handful of employees but as they begin to develop games and earn more capital, they can hire more employees and move into bigger studios which allows them to make more games and unlock new features.
Players can train their employees in certain skills by having them participate in professional development. This bumps up their statistics and gives the player a bigger chance of developing a successful game. Money can be spent on advertising, paying salaries, purchasing status upgrades, and attending conventions. If the player is running low on funds, contracts can be taken on where, instead of making a game, the player is completing tasks for movie studios and other game developers.

Planning: Developing a systematic approach for setting and achieving goals.
Everything the player does in Game Dev Story requires a certain amount of planning. The player needs to make sure that they know how much money they have to work with when planning on hiring new employees, beginning a new game development project, or purchasing a new license to develop for a console. If the player overextends their funds, they may need to take on other work, which decreases the reputation of the game side of your business. If your funds get too low while you are developing a game, you may even need to cancel the project. Players also need to plan how they are going to divide up the experience they earn among the employees. Giving too much experience to one employee can make them excel at one skill while other employees fall behind and affect the success of your game.
Flexibility: Trying something new.
The game creation aspect of Game Dev Story allows for the player to create many different types of games. The player can be flexible and try different consoles, different genres, different themes, and different boosts. Depending on the combination, your game can be incredibly successful or completely fail. By trying new combinations, the player will see which games are popular and which options they should never try again.
