Taiko no Tatsujin: Pop, Tap, Beat is a rhythm game where the player drums along to the beat of a song in order to earn high scores and unlock other features within the game.
The game features several ways to play, including solo mode, multiplayer, and quick match where you play against people all around the world with skills levels that match yours.
There are also several different levels of difficulty so the game is accessible to beginners through advanced players. Once a song is selected, drum prompts will begin to scroll across the screen from right to left. Once the prompt lands within the target circle, the player taps the screen to drum out that note. Red circles are for tapping the top of the drum while blue circles are for tapping the side of the drum. There are also special features like the balloon or the drum roll which can earn you more points if executed correctly. The difficulty level selected directly impacts the number of notes, their complexity, and the speed at which they scroll across the screen. When the song is completed, the player will receive their score and the points associated with it. These points can unlock new features, such as costumes for your drum avatar and new songs.
Taiko no Tatsujin: Pop, Tap, Beat is free to play with a subscription to Apple Arcade. Wireless Controller use is also supported by this game.
Focus: Blocking out distractions.
The game screen in Taiko no Tatsujin is very busy and colorful, with characters dancing and moving about and points earned and drumming streaks accumulating on screen as well. If the player loses their focus and finds that they are looking all over the screen, they might miss notes or lose their rhythm all together and need to start the game over. For players who struggle with focus, starting on the easy mode and increasing the transparency of the background can make it easier to focus on the notes until they are more comfortable with focusing on just the notes.
Working Memory: Recalling and retaining information in our minds while working.
The player needs to use their working memory skills to remember what portion of the drum they need to tap in order to successfully earn points and keep their drumming streak going. They need to remember this while actively drumming to the beat of the song so there is very little time for processing; the player needs to access the information they need and apply it right away. This gets increasingly hard as you move up through the difficulty levels of the game. For players who struggle with working memory, completing the tutorial and then playing several songs on easy mode can help build up the working memory skills needed to successfully play this game.
