Mama Hawk
Game Type: ESRB Rating: Everyone Platform/Console: , , LWK Recommended Age: Any Thinking Skills Used: ,

Android  |  iTunes

In Mama Hawk, the player controls a mother hawk who has to feed one or more babies (depending on the level) until they are old enough to leave the nest. The player must fly their mama back and forth across the screen to catch various animals. Some animals, like mice, are relatively easy to catch. As the player advances, however, he or she will face animals that react to the hawk’s presence, run faster than the hawk can fly, or even animals that can hurt the hawk. The player also has to keep in mind that the babies must be fed at regular intervals or the Babies get angry and the level is failed.

The game also has a “wiki” that shows the animals the player has unlocked—along with their special power (such as running fast). There are also upgrades and costumes the player can buy for Mama using the coins they earn playing the game. Finally, the game offers a prize wheel, daily reward, leaderboard, special levels, and an arcade.

Mama Hawk has in-app ads and purchases. The ESRB rated it E for Everyone and LW4K agrees, although some kids may not do well with the idea of capturing cute animals to feed to the baby birds.

Mama Hawk helps kids practice and improve the following skills:

FocusMama Hawk

Getting started and then maintaining attention and effort to tasks.

Both Mama and the animals she is trying to catch move. This, combined with the timer element of hungry babies, means that the player really needs to use their focus skills. If they procrastinate getting a level started, they will lose time with the baby birds, who will get angry and even die if they aren’t fed regularly. Also, if the player doesn’t ignore internal and external distractions and engage their short-term focus skills, they will miss out on animals or the warning signs that the babies are getting anxious. If they don’t stay focused, they will fail levels, fail to earn coins, and even be told they are a bad mom.

Time Management

Being efficient and aware of our use of time and effort.

This game requires the player to use their time management skills by keeping pace with the speed of the animals and with the impatience of the baby birds. If the player isn’t staying aware of these aspects, they could miss out on animals or end up with dead baby birds. If they use these thinking skills, however, they will be able to time the capture of the prey animals and feed them to the babies before they are upset. The babies will grow up and leave the nest, the player will finish the level and earn coins, and new levels will be unlocked.
