In Math vs. Zombies users are tasked with fighting off an invasion of cartoon zombies through solving simple math equations. Zombies approach the user’s screen, each with a different equations above their head. Inputting the correct answer allows the user to “zap” a zombie, transforming it back into a regular kid. A series of incorrect answers causes players to both lose power in their zapper, as well as health. Math vs. Zombies has three difficulty modes: easy, medium, and hard. Users traverse through six levels before facing a “boss” encounter within each zone (addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division zone). Successfully completing a level allows users to progress to the next and more difficult stage. This game contains no inappropriate content, with no blood or gore, and users do not kill zombies, rather return them to human form. Still, parents may want to consider the game’s spooky presentation, and may need to help determine which difficulty level is most appropriate. Nevertheless, Math vs. Zombies offers a fun and engaging way for young learners to practice and sharpen basic math skills, and comes recommended for use with children ages 4 -12.

THIS APP IS GOOD FOR KIDS WHO NEED HELP WITH:

Focus

Getting started and then maintaining attention and effort to tasks.

Math v Zombies

Math vs. Zombies requires players to both maintain focus on an overall task and shift focus throughout each stage. Users must react quickly and answer accurately to each zombie threat by successfully solving every equation. Zombies generally approach two at a time with little or no reprieve between waves. Because of these mechanics, users must be able to practice focusing and maintaining attention to their task for the duration of each level while simultaneously transferring from one equation to another. Users who are able to concentrate on the overall level while also quickly adapting to each new equation, changing focus from one enemy to the next, will quickly defeat zombies and advance to new levels and stages.

Time Management

Being efficient and aware of our use of time and effort.

Quickly approaching zombies seek to injure users and drain their "zapper's" power. Users must be able to work quickly, accurately, and efficiently under pressures of time. Failing to solve an equation quickly enough allows zombies to get close and damage the user's health meter. Solving equations too hastily, however, may result in incorrect answers. In order to save the zombies and remove the threat, players must balance speed and accuracy, managing time between multiple math equations while keeping note of the zombies that pose the most immediate threat.

Users must also practice good Time Management techniques when dealing with equations that are difficult to solve. For example, when unable to quickly answer an equation, it might be better to move on to the next equation to ensure the screen does not become overrun with zombies. Taking damage from a single zombie is strategically better than spending too much time on a difficult equation while failing to stop the waves of zombies approaching before and after.
