In Mario Kart Wii, players race to the finish as their favorite Nintendo characters on one of 32 zany tracks. Players collect various items to use along the way and can steer using the Wii’s motion controls (standard button controls are also available). Players can either compete against computer opponents, or challenge friends locally or online. As players compete for the cup in different racing circuits, new tracks and vehicles become unlocked. Gameplay is non-violent and involves simple controls, so the game comes recommended to players ages 5+.

This Game is Good for Kids Who Need Help With:

Working Memory

Recalling and retaining information in our minds while working.

Every track in Mario Kart Wii provides its own unique set of twists, turns and hazards, requiring players to recall various bits of information as they race. Jumps, mud pits, and other obstacles litter each track, and it only takes one bad crash to send racers back to the end of the line. Quick reflexes alone aren't always enough, so the more information players recall about the track, the better their chances of winning.

Items can also be picked up throughout each track, granting players numerous ways to gain an edge. Some items allow players to hinder opponents by dropping slippery banana peels or shooting shells, while others offer bursts of speed. With nearly twenty items in the game, memorizing the purpose of each one is key to using them effectively mid-race.

Focus

Getting started and then maintaining attention and effort to tasks.

Mario Kart Wii is both fast-paced and challenging, so players will need to remain intently focused on various aspects of the race in order to win. Players not only have to keep their eyes on the track ahead, but also must pay close attention to the positions of other competitors. Mario Kart Wii can be unforgiving at times; one wrong move at the wrong time can cost a player multiple positions in the race. But though focus and concentration, players can dodge obstacles, properly time the use of crucial items like speed-boosting mushrooms and utilize offensive weapons to jettison themselves into the lead.
