Knotwords is a logic puzzle game designed to look like a traditional crossword puzzle. However, unlike a crossword puzzle, the player does not receive any hints to help them figure out which words go where. Instead, the puzzle is broken down into different chunks where the player only has a limited amount of letters to choose from. The player then needs to build words by combining these chunks of the puzzle together in a meaningful way.

If the player gets stuck and would like a hint, they will not receive the word that is the answer to that part of the puzzle. Instead, they will receive a clue typical of crossword puzzles.

The game features several different ways to play including a daily puzzle, a monthly puzzle book, and Standard vs Tricky puzzles. The game allows for play without paying for the app but to unlock all of the features, you will need to subscribe to the app. Several subscription options are available including a one time lifetime purchase.

Knotwords is rated suitable for ages 4 and up but due to the complexity of the words, we recommend this game for children 9 and up.

Knotwords helps kids practice and improve the following skills:

Working Memory: Recalling and retaining information in our minds while working.

In order to complete the puzzle, the player needs to remember the spelling of the word they want to use while they are solving individual chunks of the puzzle. If they spell the word wrong, they will see that the incorrect answer is scribbled out in pink, meaning that they need to correct something before the puzzle can be completed. While the length of time the player takes to complete the puzzle is measured, there is no time limit to complete the puzzles, so players can take their time and practice their working memory skills without time pressures.

Flexibility: Trying something new.

In order to solve the puzzles in the game, the player needs to be able to use their flexibility skills to try new words. Sometimes a word will fit into a set of boxes but will still not be the correct answer to the puzzle. The player will see this when they complete other sections and run out of options for words to spell. The player then needs to use their flexibility skills and try new combinations of letters to spell different words or adjust one or two letters to create a new word. If the player is stuck they can always use a hint but these are limited so playing with the idea that you will need to adjust your letters is a good frame of mind to have.
