In Dustforce, players control a ninja-like janitor battling against the evil forces of uncleanliness. Although the premise is a bit wacky, the game itself is a frantic, fast-paced platforming action game that has players leaping acrobatically from wall to wall while fighting enemies and sweeping up their mess. In order to advance in the game, players must complete levels quickly and earn points for style. Players are judged at the end of each level based on the percentage of mess they have cleaned up and the style or “finesse” in which they do so, which is determined by the player’s ability to build a chain of consecutive moves without stopping or being hit by an enemy. This game is recommended to gamers ages 11 and up due to its mild cartoon violence and somewhat steep learning curve.

THIS GAME IS GOOD FOR KIDS WHO NEED HELP WITH:

Focus

Getting started and then maintaining attention and effort to tasks.

The world of Dustforce is broken up into several distinct worlds, each containing around a dozen large, unique levels that players can climb, leap, dash, and fight their way through. The layout of each level consists of a maze of walls, ledges, and pits that the player can perform a number of acrobatic moves across. Because the gameplay moves at such a quick pace, players must be unremittingly attentive of their surroundings, looking for the next obstacle to climb or enemy to face in order to build their combo of vanquished dust. The character's arsenal of attacks and movements are somewhat limited, but it still takes a high level of focus and concentration to know precisely what skill to use and timing when to use it.

At the end of each level the player is ranked based on the amount of dust swept up, numbers of enemies quelled, and the player's level of finesse. Finesse is judged by how smoothly the player traversed the level; calculated by the combo built during gameplay. If a player's score fails to meet a desirable level, he will not receive a key, which are necessary to open new levels in the world. Because of the slightly steep learning curve of the game, Dustforce can be quite challenging and will often require players to replay certain sections of various levels, or whole levels entirely, in order to master their finesse and advance through the game. Substantial practice and sustained attention are needed to master each stage, requiring a high level of focus and determination to progress further into the game.

Time Management

Being efficient, and aware of our use of time and effort.

Upon starting a level a timer will begin. Defeated players get to restart from the most recent checkpoint reached in the level, but the timer will still continue to click. Thus, while players won't have to completely restart the level, their overall time will suffer with each subsequent defeat. Therefore, it may be best to retry from the begining to maintain a better overall time. As such, a decent final completion time is a good indication of a solid performance. A player's best completion times are posted to a worldwide leaderboard, where he can see how he ranks among all Dustforce players worldwide. Seeing how others are performing on a level gives players an accurate judgement of their ability, and provides them with incentive to keep working to improve their own times.

However, completion time is not the only measure of a player's score, as continuous combos earn points for finesse. This means players need to balance speed with precision, as moving too fast can cause players to slip up and break their combo. Players must maintain an appropriate level of urgency while traversing levels, but if they rush through they could end up ignoring key elements of the level, missing piles of dust and breaking their combo.
