A love letter to fans of Dungeons and Dragons and other tabletop RPGs, Knights of Pen and Paper 2 asks players not just to build characters based on their fantasy class and race, but based on the type of person they are. Players can personalize their character with lifestyle options like surfer, rocker, or goth. They then interact with the DM (dungeon master) to access menus and take on quests, with the backgrounds evolving to fit the scenarios at hand. By building characters and equipping them with the appropriate items, players may venture through their own solo Dungeons and Dragons-esque experience. Knights of Pen and Paper 2 is rated T for Teen due to the cartoon violence of combat, and we at Learning Works for Kids stand behind this rating. Kids who are 12 years old and up are best able to safely enjoy the game and benefit from the thinking skill practice it offers.

THIS GAME IS GOOD FOR KIDS WHO NEED HELP WITH:

Flexibility

Adapting and adjusting to changing conditions and expectations

Knights of Pen and Paper 2 is constantly throwing new enemy types and situations at the player, challenging them to deal with them in the moment. Because of this, flexibility is necessary to survive the various scenarios and progress through the game. Additionally, building your team in a manner that allows for flexibility is just as important. With each of the playable characters capable of taking on different classes and have special abilities, creating a group that can adapt appropriately in the moment is important to a player's success. On top of this, various events can occur when venturing across the map. Players may get ambushed when moving from place to place, and resting can result in similar surprises. Players need to embody a certain level of flexibility to allow for these events and deal with them when they crop up.

Planning

Developing a systematic approach for setting and achieving goals.

As mentioned above, players mold their characters however they like, which gives them an advantage when it comes to planning for whatever situation may come their way. Players are encouraged to equip their characters with various items that will aid in their survival, as well as potions and one-use items that will save characters from certain demise. Each quest is associated with a different level of difficulty, indicating how much effort or skill may be needed to get out of that situation alive. This includes any fights that are voluntarily attempted, meaning that players always know exactly what they should be expecting. This makes planning an indispensable skill for players of Knights of Pen and Paper 2 to practice in order to reach the later portions of the game.
