Costume Quest - Educational Game Review image 1
Game Type: ESRB Rating: Everyone 10+ Platform/Console: , , LWK Recommended Age: 10+ Thinking Skills Used: ,

In Costume Quest, players assume the role of a trick-or-treater on a mission to save a sibling kidnapped by candy-hungry monsters. The hero must travel from door to door and collect candy in order to gain access to new levels. Doors are answered by adults with treats, and occasionally they’ll have demands that must be met before they will dole out candy. Sometimes, the doors are opened by hungry monsters who force players into battle. Battles are fought in turn-based combat, with players choosing attacks and special abilities one at a time. By defeating monsters, players and their companions earn more candy, gain new costumes, and unlock new abilities. Along the way, the player’s party is joined by other neighborhood children, each with unique costumes and abilities. Costume Quest contains minimal depictions of cartoon violence, but includes substantial amounts of reading and is therefore recommended for players ages 10 and older.

Self-Control

Managing our actions, feelings and behaviors.

Costume Quest introduces an interesting spin on turn-based battle not commonly found in other role-playing games. Before players attack, they are given a window of opportunity to press a specific button that will cause the hero to deal extra damage. This button is random and must be pressed within the short period of time allowed. If an incorrect button is pressed, the attack will do less damage. This move can also be used defensively by pressing the correct button before a monster attacks, which causes the hero to take less damage than normal. Therefore, inflicting damage and maintaining defense is dependent on the ability to control reactions and not act impulsively when the button prompts appear, making sure to select the right button within the time allotted. Becoming frustrated only makes this task harder, so players need to avoid becoming aggitated or flustered if the battle isn't going their way. By remainging calm, players better their chances of success.

Focus

Getting started and then maintaining attention and effort to tasks.

Costume Quest involves a number of missions which focus on progressing the main storyline as well as numerous side quests. With a variety of choices available to them, players must prioritize the amount of time and effort to devote to each individual task. To provide the player with incentive, rewards are granted for completing the smaller side quests including rare items, special tools, and weapons to use in combat. Additionally, progress in current and past quests can be tracked through a checklist in game.
