Players only have a small amount of time to arrange the blocks, as more and more blocks continue to fall. As each puzzle piece falls from above, players have less space to work with, and if the pieces stack all the way up to the top of the screen, it's game over. As the levels progress, the pieces fall quicker, challenging players to quickly form a strategy and manipulate each piece efficiently.

The blocks available to players in Tetris are chosen randomly, and a current block might not fit precisely with any other block on the screen. Players who are trying to create a particular pattern of blocks must be careful to place pieces in the best possible spot, which may not always be a perfect fit. If players get too caught up with finding "the right block" for their stack, they will quickly become overwhelmed with unsorted stacks of blocks. The faster that players can adapt to random pieces, the better they'll be able to clear out lines and build their score.
