Words With Friends is a word-building game that challenges the player to earn more points than his opponent through the strategic spelling of words. The player is given seven letter blocks, which must be placed on a large grid in order to create words. Once the first word is built, all other words must build upon it, expanding either horizontally or vertically on the grid. Each letter is worth a specific number of points, and points can be multiplied if letters are placed on special tiles on the game board. As letter blocks are used, new ones replace the old ones until all blocks have been played. The player who accumulates the most points after all blocks have been played wins. Words With Friends features no inappropriate content, and is suitable for all ages, but due to the basic reading and spelling requirements, is recommended for ages 8 and up.

THIS GAME IS GOOD FOR KIDS WHO NEED HELP WITH:

Planning

Developing a systematic approach for setting and achieving goals.

Creating or adding to a word in Words With Friends is not a task to be taken lightly. The points a player can earn from a word vastly differs depending on which tiles he places his letter blocks on. Special tiles can either double or triple the points for the specific letter on the tile or the entire word, which can have a serious impact on his score. It is important to carefully examine letters before using them to determine what words he can create and where the words would best fit on the game board, as well as which of the words are worth the most points.

There are a number of different strategies and approaches the player may employ to help do this. For example, he may identify the highest value letter block he has and attempt to form words with that specific letter. Or, he may locate a special tile on the game board he wishes to use, such as "triple word", and attempt to create a word that manages to use that tile. He may even combine both strategies to earn substantial points, using high value letters on special tiles. By using Planning skills to formulate various strategies, the player can ensure he scores form high-scoring words and challenges his opponent to a tough game.

Focus

Getting started and then maintaining attention and effort to tasks.

When a player is motivated to build high-scoring words, a great deal of thinking must go into deciding "what word and where." Additionally, the player must decide whether to add to an existing word on the game board or try to build an entirely new one. With so many options and factors to consider, it is sometimes challenging to decide on how and where to start. It is here that Focus skills come into play, as the player must effectively create words and identify the best places to put them. There are many factors to consider, and the player must decide how best to make a well-calculated move. Words With Friends provides varying amount of difficulty depending on opponent, and highly-skilled players will truly test a player's attention and focus.
