Pocky and Rocky: Reshrined is a retro-style scrolling shooter game centered on two characters; Pocky, a young shrine maiden and Rocky, a tanuki. In this game, the yokai in Japan have started to do evil things and it is up to Pocky and Rocky to find out what is going on. The player takes on the role of one of five characters and moves through a scrolling landscape, attacking enemies, avoiding injury, collecting bonuses, and bringing boss enemy yokai back to their senses.

The player needs to make it to the checkpoints in each level in order to progress. The player character has a set of hearts that represent the amount of damage they can take and a set number of lives before they need to start the level over again. The action buttons on the controller represent different styles of attacks the player can execute in order to defeat enemies and obtain power ups and buffers.

Pocky and Rocky: Reshrined is rated E10+ and is available on Nintendo Switch and PS4.

Pocky and Rocky: Reshrined helps kids practice and improve the following skills:

Focus: Getting started and then maintaining attention and effort to tasks.

In order to make it from one level of the game to the next, the player needs to be able to focus on what direction attacks are coming from, where the power ups and buffs are located, and the patterns they are noticing in enemy appearances and attacks. Younger players will also need to use their focusing skills for the light amount of reading that explains the story and helps the player understand why they are battling the yokai in the game.

Working Memory: Recalling and retaining information in our minds while working.

Pocky and Rocky: Reshrined requires the player to use their working memory in a variety of ways. First, players need to use this skill to remember what buttons perform which actions in the game. If the player does not use their working memory skills to remember these buttons, they may end up executing a powerful attack too soon or losing the level and needing to start from the beginning.

The player also needs to use their working memory to remember what monsters appear in the game and at what point. All monsters in the game have certain attacks that are repeated at timed intervals and players can defeat them much easier if they are able to remember when they will emerge and when they will execute certain attacks.
