Word Laces is a letter puzzle game where the player is creating words by connecting letters on the screen. When the player opens the game, they will see a picture at the top of the screen and a series of letters in columns below. A shoe is displayed in the bottom right hand corner of the screen and the player is using the laces of the shoe to make new words. The player clicks on the starting letter of the word and then uses their finger to drag the laces of a shoe back and forth across the screen until a letter is spelled. Because the pattern is like lacing up a shoe, the player needs to connect letters that are in the column directly across from the letter previously chosen. The picture at the top of the screen provides clues about the types of words you are looking for in each level. If the player is stuck, they can click on the lightbulb button for hints on where to begin or where to go next.
The app also features daily challenges which can unlock special shoe “skins” for you to use when playing.
Each level in the game earns you points which then unlock new types of shoes such as hiking boots, ice skates, and high top sneakers. For players who are learning a second language, the game’s language can be changed so the player can play in French, Japanese, Spanish, German, Arabic, Chinese, Korean, and multiple other languages.
Word Laces is free to play with a subscription to Apple Arcade. Although its content is appropriate for children of all ages, finding and spelling words may be difficult for younger children without the assistance of an adult.
Working Memory: Recalling and retaining information in our minds while working.
Word games are a great way for players to practice their working memory skills. In Word Laces, the player needs to look at the picture, the letters on the screen, and formulate word options in their head while performing the physical act of connecting the letters together on screen. For players who struggle with working memory, this can be difficult because it requires keeping a lot of information in your memory at the same time while performing a physical task. Players can use the hint option if they are stuck or voice the words out loud as they think of them and a partner player can make the connections on screen. Or the player can write the words down first on a piece of paper or use voice to text on the mobile device and then use the list to try and spell out the words.
Flexibility: Adapting and adjusting to changing conditions and expectations.
Each level of Word Laces features a new picture, a new set of letters, and a new series of words that need to be spelled. The player needs to adapt to these changing conditions and look for words by using the picture for hints. The words can sometimes be literal items within the picture or implied concepts, so the player needs to be ready to think up a list of possible words in order to complete the level. For players who struggle with flexibility, they may find using the hints can help them find the first letter of a word, which could provide enough information to discover the words they need to pass the level.
