Samurai Warriors 5 is a hack and slash adventure game from Koei Tecmo and is the latest game in the long-running franchise. The game takes place during the Sengoku jidai, or warring states period of Japanese history. In the game, you play as a series of characters with different objectives and goals. For example, the player can take on the role of Nobunga Oda, a real life figure in Japanese history who was given the moniker the “Demon King.”
Players need to take on huge swarms of enemies as well as more powerful bosses. They will use various attacks to accomplish this, while looking for food to replenish their health. Objectives will change or be added to as the player moves throughout the map. There are many different skills the player has at their disposal to take down enemies, including special abilities for those that are not affected by regular attacks. Players can go to the dojo to strengthen their characters by completing portions of their skill board and upgrading their weapons. Other features include the blacksmith for upgrading weapons, stables for upgrading your battle horses, and shops to purchase items for use in battle.
Focus: Blocking out distractions.
The battles in Samurai Warrior 5 are extremely chaotic. There are many different characters on screen at once and the player needs to be able to use their focusing skills to block out distractions and pay attention to the mission objective. Sometimes the boss you need to fight is surrounded by other enemies as well, making it harder to single them out for attacks. The game is also voiced in Japanese, meaning that the player needs to focus and read the subtitles to understand the story and the history behind the different characters and warring factions. For players who struggle with focus, there are certain accessibility options such as locking on to the enemy target, which keeps them in the middle of the screen for easier targeting.
Working Memory: Recalling and retaining information in our minds while working.
Because Samurai Warriors 5 is a beat 'em up game, there are many different button combinations that need to be learned in order to execute specific tasks. For example, enemies who are holding shields cannot be attacked with normal button moves, meaning that the player needs to remember which button combination to press in a very short amount of time in order to execute the move. For players who struggle with working memory, the game shows these combos on screen the first few times you practice them, allowing the player to commit them to memory more quickly.
