Necrobarista is a visual novel that takes place in a coffee shop in Melbourne, Australia. The coffee shop, or the Terminal as it’s known, is run by a colorful cast of characters, including a man who has been alive for over 100 years, a crabby barista, and a girl with a mechanical arm. The Terminal is a coffee shop with a twist; the recently departed can also visit this cafe for 24 hours before needing to move on to another plane. The story unfolds as these characters interact with one another and discuss topics such as death, friendship, and memories.

Necrobarista is available with a subscription for Apple Arcade and is rated T for Teen. A version released on the Nintendo Switch is available for purchase but it is rated M for Mature. LearningWorks for Kids would like parents to be aware of the distinction between these two versions as the content is slightly different and may not be appropriate for younger children. Necrobarista helps kids practice and improve the following skills:

Focus: Getting started and then maintaining attention and effort to tasks.

Necrobarista is a visual novel, meaning that there is a lot of reading to be done. The game does not have voice acting, meaning that the player needs to read the text on screen in order to make sense of the story. Players will need to use their focusing skills in order to pay attention to the story and to learn more about each character and how they interact with each other in the game. For players who struggle with focus, playing the game in smaller chunks can keep the game feeling fresh and not too stressful. The player can then work up to playing and focusing on the reading for longer periods of time.

Self-Awareness: Listening to others.

The characters in Necrobarista discuss issues that affect people in the real world as well. Characters talk about loss, relationships, fears, and companionship. This gives the player the opportunity to practice their self-awareness skills by listening to the other characters within the game. For players who struggle with this skill, Necrobarista gives them space to hear characters talking about their problems or their memories without needing to respond; they can simply practice their listening skills.
