Phasmophobia is an adventure game where you are a ghost hunter trying to find as much information about various spirits without becoming one yourself. You start the game off in a van with various ghost hunting equipment such as salt, a crucifix, a journal, and a thermometer. Once you choose the items to bring into the house, you have five minutes to gather as much information as possible about the type of ghost that is haunting the area. A whiteboard with objectives inside the van lists different things you can do inside the house to earn extra money, which can be used to purchase more ghost hunting equipment.
After the five minute information gathering period, the ghost might go into a hunting phase, which means you will need to try and hide so that they don’t catch you and eliminate you from the game. If a ghost does kill you, you go back to the van and lose all of your equipment.
Planning: Developing a systematic approach for setting and achieving goals.
In order to work within the limited time period of five minutes, the player needs to have a plan for how they are going to try and find information. If they are looking to achieve the optional objectives, they also need to have a plan for how those will be accomplished as well. If a player struggles with planning they may find that they have not been able to find any information about the ghost or achieve many objectives before the hunting phase begins. For these players, taking a moment to think about what equipment they are bridging with them and what objectives they will try and achieve will help set them up better for not getting caught.
Flexibility: Adapting and adjusting to changing conditions and expectations.
Within your van you can acquire a large amount of ghost-hunting equipment. But not every piece of equipment will work every time. The player needs to use their flexibility skills and be willing to try new things, move into different rooms, and generally be willing to adapt to a changing environment within a short period of time. Players who struggle with flexibility may find that they are constantly getting caught by the ghost because they are staying in one area too long or not varying the type of equipment they are using.
