Animal Crossing: New Horizons is a game where you play a character who moves to a deserted island along with some animal companions. You build and collect furniture, upgrade tents into homes, participate in design competitions and compete in seasonal challenges. The game changes with the seasons so there is always something new to explore or collect.

Students who are learning to read may need an adult’s assistance as dialogue between characters is frequent and instructions are often text-based. Nintendo Switch Online is required for some portions of the game, which requires a subscription service.

Animal Crossing: New Horizons  helps kids practice and improve the following skills:

Organization: Arranging and coordinating materials in order to complete a task.

In order to build furniture, create outfits, or upgrade tents, you will need to have certain items and certain quantities in your inventory. Inventory space is limited, which means students need to carefully select the items they take with them when they are moving about the island or going to visit Mystery Islands to collect additional resources. The tools you use in the game also break, requiring you to know how to craft them and how much of each material you will need to make them.

Planning: Developing a systematic approach for setting and achieving goals.

Animal Crossing: New Horizons has so many activities that can be done on any given day, causing some players to struggle with picking a task and sticking with it. Players who need to practice their planning skills can pick short-term projects (ex: finding four fossils on the island) before working up to long-term projects (ex: paying off your home loan). Because the game has so many large and small projects, it is the perfect environment for players to practice their planning skills.
