William and Sly 2 may be one of the most playable adventure/platform games available for free on Kongregate.com. With a stunning display of color, music, and fantasy, William and Sly 2 is a peaceful play. Sly the fox is William’s companion, a young man who had his journal stolen by gnomes. It’s up to Sly to collect the 25 pieces of the journal hidden throughout the world. Players move laterally and jump using only WASD or the arrow keys. With only a few other key commands, gameplay is fairly simple and straightforward. Players are immersed in the beautiful wooded world as soon as they make their first jump. Explore hidden caves and open field platforms while searching for the rest of the journal and the 100 mushrooms (the main quest). Side quests are offered as players discover more of the world. New temporary powers allow players to solve more difficult puzzles. While these puzzles and side quests are not essential to the game, they keep players invested after collecting the journal, allowing them to continue to explore the environment. We recommend William and Sly 2 for player 6 and up, as it does require some reading skills.
THIS GAME IS GOOD FOR KIDS WHO NEED HELP WITH:
Focus
Attention to detail is the name of the game. In order to find all mushrooms and journal pages, players must demonstrate strong map reading skills as well as goal-directed persistence. It’s important that players can travel quickly through the world while maintaining a familiarity with the landscape. Because there are so many hidden caves, players must remember areas on the map that are still undiscovered. It’s important that players pay attention the Ohnem’s directions. These gods offer side quests and make gameplay more exciting and robust. Players who complete a task from start to finish exemplify goal directed persistence -- and ultimately the focus thinking skill.
Flexibility
By nature, platformers require players to be flexible thinkers. Flexibility refers to the player’s ability to adjust their style of play to meet new levels of difficulty as well as new tasks and objectives. Flexible players do no give up when they get stuck. Instead, they find a solution. While jumping from platform to platform requires players to demonstrate flexible play, a better example in William and Sly 2 would be the hidden caves. Where are the last 10 mushrooms, players might ask? Exploration is essential to completing the quest. We recommend that players are flexible enough to explore all the nooks and crannies of this small to medium sized map. Only though exploration will players find the hidden caves and the essential loot located inside.
