Trine 2 is a side-scrolling action-puzzle game where the player takes on the roll of three different characters on a mission to save their magical kingdom. The three characters are played in conjunction with one another. By pressing a button, players can instantly switch between a cunning wizard, an agile rogue archer, and a strong warrior. Depending on the task at hand, players will have to utilize the unique skills of all three characters to progress. Advancing through the game involves everything from combat to puzzle solving. There is limited fantasy violence in the game, as well as some small amounts of green monster blood. Due to the mild violence and difficulty, Trine 2 is recommended to players ages 10 and up.
Adapting and adjusting to changing conditions and expectations. Adapting to obstacles.
Flexibility is the most vital thinking skill needed in order to advance through Trine 2. The player takes on the roll of three different characters in his quest to save the kingdom. By pressing a button he can instantly swap one character out for another. The wizard character has the ability to lift objects from afar and conjure new objects like boxes and platforms. The rouge character has the ability to swing from wooden platforms with her grappling hook and shoot enemies from afar with her bow. Finally the warrior can knock down walls with his hammer, block projectiles with his shield, and fight monsters with his sword. Knowing when and how to use each of these characters plays is essential for success in Trine 2.
For example, the first part of a level may involve navigating obstacles such as spike pits and tall walls, a job best left for the rouge and her grappling hook. However, midway through the level the player may be ambushed by goblins and have to fight his way through them, a job better suited to the warrior character. The end of the level may include a puzzle or two which requires the wizard's powers of conjuration and levitation to complete. As the game advances the puzzles will become more complex and certain obstacles will require the use of the skills of all the characters. Being able to quickly switch characters and master their powers is key for success.
Getting started and then maintaining attention and effort to tasks.
Each level in Trine 2 will contain multiple puzzles. To effectively deal with these puzzles the player must be aware of his environment at all times. There are often subtle clues in the game's back drop that give hints as to how the player can solve a given puzzle. Sustained focus and awareness of the environment can make daunting puzzles much easier, and story progression faster. Spotting subtle environmental clues -- such as bubbling puddles or sparking plants -- is essential to cracking puzzles. These small cues inform the player of the actions needed to progress. Examples include the creation of larger bubbles (bubbles big enough to carry a player into the air) or growing plants into huge mushrooms that a player can use as stepping stones. While some puzzles have multiple solutions, others have only one, requiring careful attention to detail and keen focus on the game's environment.
