Set in the fictional town of Torchlight, this game has players taking “quests” from the town’s various inhabitants. This could include finding certain items or fighting specific enemies in the town’s surrounding areas. The quests take players to randomly generated dungeons, where they can defeat enemies for items or cash (called “loot”). Once they have completed their mission, players can return to the town of Torchlight to sell their goods, get new items and take on new quests. Torchlight has a cartoony theme, but does revolves around combat. Though the violence is not over the top, the game does features some blood. Due to the moderate violence, we recommend Torchlight only to players over the age of 12.

This Game is Good for Kids Who Need Help With:

Planning

Developing a systematic approach for setting and achieving goals.

In Torchlight, it is crucial to be well prepared when taking on new quests. Being prepared can mean stocking up on items and purchasing new equipment. If players don't visit the various shops before venturing out, their character can't expect to keep up with the increasingly difficult dungeons and enemies. However, being prepared may also mean diving back into a dungeon simply to gain more "experience points" and collect needed magical items to increase the power level of one's character. Sometimes playing a dungeon several times in a row is needed to attain an appropriate power level for upcoming challenges.

Flexibility

Adapting and adjusting to changing conditions and expectations.

There is a large variety of enemies in Torchlight, and their tactics differ greatly. To be effective, players will need to be adaptable and anticipate these changes in enemy tactics. This is especially important when the player reaches levels of a dungeon, or chooses to play through the higher difficulty modes of the game. In more advanced difficulties, enemies start employing new attacks and strategies to keep things interesting and challenging. Players should avoid taking for granted enemies they have seen before on lesser difficulty settings, and be ready to cope with the new tactics these familiar foes will employ. Players also gain new abilities as they progress in the game, and must be able to adapt new strategies to make the most of them, utilizing all the attacks and spells at their disposal.
