Big Brain Academy - Educational Game Review
Game Type: , ESRB Rating: Everyone Platform/Console: LWK Recommended Age: 7+ Thinking Skills Used: , , Academic Skills Used:

Big Brain Academy is a game where players will test their abilities and “exercise” their brains in five different categories — Think (logic questions), Analyze (reason-based questions), Compute (math problems), Identify (visual puzzles), and Memorize (memory-based games). Each category has three modes, making for a total of 15 playable mini-games. Players will need to count coins, identify shadows, count stacks of blocks, memorize musical sounds, and more in order to bulk up their brain. After practicing, players can then test their skills by running through a series of challenges, after which the game will award them a “brain weight” representing the strength of their skills in each category. Since the game has no crude content and requires only minimal reading, it is deemed suitable for ages 7 and up.

this game is good for kids who need help with:

Self-Awareness

Understanding our own actions, thoughts and feelings.

In this game, players can see their progress in each of the five Brain Academy subjects, including memorization, thinking, identification, computation, and analysis. With the graph provided on the main screen, players can appraise their performance to identify and describe which areas they need more practice in and the areas in which they excel. By understanding their own weaknesses in the game, players can work to improve these areas and gain a better brain weight.

Focus

Getting started and then maintaining attention and effort to tasks.

For each activity, players are given a bronze, silver, or gold medal to represent their performance. Their "brain weight" depends on how well they do in each of the game's five categories. To increase their brain weight, players must be persistent and dedicated, revisiting completed activities in order to improve their proficiency and do well enough to earn better medals. Without determination and patience, players may remain at a stagnant brain weight, depriving themselves the sense of accomplishment that comes with earning gold medals and achieving a heftier brain weight.

Working Memory

Recalling and retaining information while working.

As explained, players need to go back to activities they previously completed in order to earn better medals. Working Memory skills can help players recall information learned from previous attempts, or recall and reuse good strategies. This helps them complete activities faster and with less effort, such as when players rapidly recall the denominations of coins used in one mode that they need to add up promptly. Additionally, good Working Memory skills are invaluable to solving math problems quickly and accurately, making it easier to mentally work with numbers and solve equations on the spot. Even recalling simple, memorized calculations like a table of multiplication comes in very handy while playing Big Brain Academy.
