In Arcane Castle, players use magical powers to battle their enemies and ultimately defeat the evil wizard. Various enemy types appear throughout the game, and players must use a variety of spells to defeat them. Certain keyboard commands activate different spells, which players must recall in order to beat the particular enemies they encounter. The levels automatically scroll right, so players must act fast to survive. Arcane is recommended for players 9 and up due to mild cartoon violence and the game’s level of challenge.

This Game is Good for Kids Who Need Help With:

Working Memory

Recalling and retaining information in their minds while working.

Arcane Castle - Educational Game Review image 1In Arcane Castle, players must be able to quickly recall the correct key commands to press in order to defeat upcoming enemies. If they press the wrong button, then the wizard will lose health; if defeated, the level will restart. Thus, they not only need to recall what key casts which spell, but which spell is required to defeat each different enemy. By memorizing this information and quickly recalling it in the game, players will be able to strengthen their memory skills and be more successful at the game.

Flexibility

Adapting and adjusting to changing conditions and expectations.

In Arcane Castle, each level is randomly generated. There is no consistent pattern to the layout of enemies and obstacles, so players must be ready to react at any time and switch rapidly between different spells. The game also introduces a new enemy with each level, as well as a new spell to use against that enemy. For example, all the obstacles and enemies in the first level can be destroyed by using the Explosion spell. However, the second level introduces armored knights, which are immune to explosions and can only be defeated with the Frog spell. Throughout the course of the game, players are asked to recognize each new challenge and respond to it as efficiently as they can.

Focus:

Getting started and then maintaining attention and effort to tasks.

In order to avoid taking damage, players need to remain attentive to quickly identify upcoming hazards and enemies. For example, there might be a tall rock formation in front of a low-hanging stalactite, with a zombie lingering a short distance beyond them. To get through this section, players must first use "Explosion" to destroy the formation, jump over the remaining rock pile, duck beneath the stalactite, and finally cast "Dispell" once the zombie is within range. If players miss just one hazard, they will suffer damage, decreasing their chances of finishing the stage.
