Tales of Arise is a role playing game released by Bandai Namco. The game takes place on the planet Dahna, which has been enslaved and controlled by the Renans for over 300 years. You play as a character known only as Iron Mask, a man with no memories, an inability to feel pain, and a large iron mask covering his entire face. Tired of the tyranny he and his fellow Dahnans face at the hands of their oppressors, he joins up with a resistance group to fight back. Joining the group as well is Shionne, a Renan on the run who deals horrible pain to anyone who touches her. Iron Mask and Shionne team up for convenience but as they move through the lands together, they may find that they have more in common than they thought. Shionne wants to defeat the five Renan lords who rule over the different areas of the game.
Combat within the game takes place in real-time, and players can chain together moves to create combos. This game also uses Boost Strikes, meaning that you can combine powerful attacks with the attacks of your other party members to do extra damage. The game also features a cooking and crafting system which allows you to add buffs to your party and customize weapons and accessories.
Tales of Arise is rated T for Teen for references to alcohol, blood, language, suggestive themes, and violence. Focus: Blocking out distractions.
All of the battles in Tales of Arise take place in real time, meaning that the player does not have time to think about their moves like they might in a turn-based RPG. This means that they need to use their focusing skills, make decisions quickly and efficiently, and avoid being distracted by the large amount of visual information on the screen. Because you are controlling one character but have other members in your party, they will also be performing actions on screen. Numbers showing damage, combos, and other visual information combine with the movement of enemies and other characters to create a chaotic scene. For players who struggle with focus, it can be very distracting. Keeping your eye on your character and letting the AI control the other party members can help practice blocking out distractions but this is something the player needs to practice doing throughout the game.
Organization: Arranging and coordinating materials in order to complete a task.
Players have an inventory of various items they will need to make it through the game. Players have equipment such as weapons and armor, but they also have healing items like apple gels, costumes that change character appearances, food to use for cooking, and items to use for crafting and modifying weapons. Much like the player needs to make sure they have what they need before going to school or soccer practice, they need to check their inventory to make sure that they have the items they need before heading out into areas where there will be enemies. For players who struggle with organization, they may find that they run out of supplies at a crucial time and will need to replay a part of the game over because they didn’t have what they needed to make it through a tougher area. For these players, making a mental checklist of essential items like healing and reviving items can help ensure that these things are acquired before moving into areas with enemies or boss fights.
