In Add ‘Em Up, players attempt to clear the tiles off of a playing board. This is done by placing a numbered tile on a grid, with the goal being for the placed tile to equal the sum of its surrounding numbers. Each tile a player moves onto the grid is surrounded by a 3×3 square. When the tile is placed, all the surrounding numbers are added together. If the last number of the resulting sum is the same as the number on the piece, all the affected tiles disappear. Players will need to use good math skills while playing, and reading is required as well in order to follow game instructions. There is no violent or otherwise inappropriate content, but due to academic requirements, Add ‘Em Up is recommended to players ages 8 and up.
Developing a systematic approach for setting and achieving goals, and improving short-term planning.
Add 'Em Up helps develop good Planning skills by tasking players to place numbered tiles strategically on a grid. The goal is to eliminate tiles by adding the numbers on them together and placing a tile with the last number of that sum adjacent to them. Players can see the next five numbered tiles they will have to place on the side of the screen. This allows them to think ahead and ensure there will be a spot for each upcoming number. If they are unable to eliminate tiles, the screen will begin filling up. If they run out of space, the game ends. To ensure this does not happen, players must plan ahead and make room for all the numbers in their queue.
Getting started and then maintaining attention and effort to tasks, especially short-term tasks.
Players must use their Focus skills at all times to pay attention to the current layout of the game grid. Sometimes the tile they move onto the grid can go in more than one place, so it is important to be thorough and check to see other spots where it can be used in order to maximize the number of tiles they can make disappear. Players also have to double check their math to ensure they do not misplace numbers. Otherwise, the placed tile remains on the board and players must then work a little harder to get it out of the way. Players also need to keep an eye on the tile queue to the right of the game grid, and use it to plan their next few moves.
