Timer+ is a simple yet effective app for creating timed tasks and staying focused while completing household duties or class assignments. Kids can create, label and reuse timers for anything – from completing homework, to doing chores or practicing a musical instrument — and its simple design makes it very easy to use. It also features a voiceover feature for those who are visually impaired, can run in the background (allowing kids to use other apps while the time runs). Parents may need to help help younger kids create and label tasks within the app, but its straightforward, easy-to-use design makes it suitable for use with kids ages 8 and up.

Focus

Getting started and then maintaining attention and effort to tasks.

screen568x568-1Timer+ allows users to create and save timed tasks, enabling them to make preset timers for common school or household activities. By setting a specific amount of time to accomplish a goal, the app helps users keep focus and stay on task. Multiple timers can run at once, allowing users to break down tasks into smaller portions. For instance, three hours could be set to run for study time, while separate timers can be set to go off and remind users when its time to switch subjects or move on to a new assignments. The app encourages users to concentrate for the duration of their tasks and goals, while tracking their remaining times in the app. The app also serves as a great tool to keep and schedule good daily reading habits, allowing parents to set specific amounts of time a day for kids to read.

Time Management

Being efficient and aware of our use of time and effort.

Timer+ helps users set and achieve goals within a reasonable time frame. Using the app is a great way for kids to gain an understanding of how long a task takes to finish, and adjust the time they allot to complete it accordingly. Since the app saves preset timers, users can name several common task they must complete on a daily or weekly basis. Over time, they should try to become as efficient as possible, changing the corresponding amount of time listed for the task within the app as they begin to "master" it. Eventually, they should have a list of weekly obligations each set with reasonably productive amounts of time, helping them learn how to finish tasks both efficiently and thoroughly.

Time+ is an excellent app for helping your child utilize the Time Management and Focus thinking skills. Try some of our suggested activities, or leave us your own ideas in the comment field at the bottom of the page.

Focus Activity

screen568x568-2Use Timer+ to create a daily reading routine for your child. Set aside a small, modest amount of time at first. Doing this will help your child stick to the schedule and see daily reading as a doable daily task. Keep track of how much your child is reading within the allotted time, and see if you can gradually stretch out the time set aside each day to read. The goal here should be for your child to both complete more reading per session, and to gradually begin to read for longer blocks of time each day.

Time Management Activity

Working efficiently doesn't come naturally to most kids. That's why Timer+ is a great way to get them thinking about time limits and what can be accomplished within them. If you haven't already, come up with some simple ways your child can help around the house. Label each of these chores within the app and ask your child to estimate how long he or she thinks it will take to complete each one. Observe while your child completes these tasks, noting the how long it took to finish each one. Note anytime your child's estimates were too long or short, and discuss these time-frames with your child. Explain that the goal is not to just finish these tasks as quickly as possible, but to do them thoroughly enough that more time won't be wasted coming back to fix hasty mistakes.
