Microsoft Word is one of the most popular word processing programs in use, and allows users to create a wide variety of text documents, including everything from essays and class projects to brochures and greeting cards. Microsoft Word is a component of Microsoft Office, a suite of applications which is commonly used in schools and businesses alike. Users will have the ability to practice writing skills, while learning ways to create a range of text documents for use at school, work and home. Microsoft Word makes the editing process much easier with of tools like “copy and paste,” word count, spell check and grammar check. For younger users or those with limited motor skills, creating content with Word serves as a viable alternative to writing traditional, handwritten notes and assignments. The app is simple to use, but features enough tools and customizations for advanced users to get the most out of the app. Since the app accommodates a range of writing skills, it comes recommended to users ages 6 and older.

This App is good for kids who need help with:

Planning

Developing a systematic approach for setting and achieving goals. Improving short-term planning.

Before creating a document, users should should decide what kind of template best fits their project, matching it to the goal of their assignment. For example, if your child is writing a letter, or making a brochure, choosing an appropriate template will make the assignment easier to complete. While trying to write a letter or a brochure in a blank document is possible, it will likely take longer to format and the quality will ultimately suffer. By determining which template to use before typing, users will achieve a better aesthetic and find their projects easier to complete. Templates can be accessed in the "New Document" tab, located under "File."

If users are assigned an essay for school, Microsoft Word could be useful for creating drafts and outlining their approach prior to writing. Outlines increase the likelihood of completing a solid, well thought-out first draft. Microsoft Word even has a planner, which your child can use to update and keep track of homework and exam dates.

Organization

Arranging and coordinating materials in order to complete a task.

Text-driven work in and of itself demands a level or organization, as written content must be presented in a well-structured manner. In order to communicate ideas and arguments, it is essential to avoid meandering or cluttered writing. Microsoft Word offers a slew of tools for creating and editing work, creating outlines and fixing spelling and sentence structure. Writing digitally affords users the opportunity to easily refine their work, as it allows them to swap out bodies of text, re-arrange wording and copy and paste content.

When saving content, is is important for users to have a system for sorting and organizing files and documents. By creating subject-related folders, users can make it easy to sort, find and reference bodies of work at a later date. Keeping a well-organized digital portfolio of files and folders becomes increasingly essential as time goes on and work loads increase, so Microsoft Word can serve as an early method for developing good organizational habits.

Flexibility

Adapting and adjusting to changing conditions and expectations.

Microsoft Word has an extensive arsenal of tools for creating a range of professional-grade documents. Users should explore these various tools, identifying which ones are most beneficial for their particular needs. Once they gain a thorough understanding of what Microsoft Word is capable of, they can experiment with different templates, headers, font colors, and backgrounds. Whether creating a presentation for history class or creating print-outs for a science project, Microsoft Word is more than simply a medium for basic word-processing. The digital tools on offer -- when paired with creativity and experimentation --can work to supplement text in a variety of ways. Users can manipulate images, link to the web, insert video and more. Users who play around with the vast range of tools will gain a better grasp of the app's capabilities and be better able to use Microsoft Word to its fullest potential.

Writing

Microsoft Word makes it easy to practice writing digitally, both for academic assignments and creative projects. The app serves as an excellent platform for developing writing skills and practicing good editing habits, Microsoft Word's range of tools helps users to quickly edit their work, stay organized and refine the overall quality of their writing. The program's ease of use can help motivate children to practice writing more frequently, while the ability to easily make edits, undo mistakes and check over spelling and grammar takes the pressure out of editing. Multiple drafts of work can be saved, as well, which allows users to safely develop a piece of writing, then compare drafts and forge a more coherent piece of work.

Furthermore, for users who struggle with fine motor skills, typing digitally can serve as a much more comfortable and time-saving alternative to writing out work by hand.
