FamJam is a family chore and goal management app for iOS and Android. The app is designed for parents to set it up in a way that helps their children set and maintain their own chore schedule, habits, and behaviors. The parent can set the app up for multiple children and each child has their own tab on the app where they can complete chores and earn points towards pre-determined awards.

When setting up the app, parents can write a short statement of purpose for their family as well as general values and rules they would like the family to follow in their day to day lives. For example, parents can say a house rule is “No cellphones during dinner,” or “We treat others the way we want to be treated.” These are visible to whoever uses the app and can be a guideline for how the rest of the app is set up.

Parents and children can set their own chores, habits, and goals on the FamJam app as well. There are lists of pre-generated options but new choices can be created by clicking on the plus icon and manually entering your information. For example, if there is not an icon for “Practice Spanish vocabulary” but it is a habit you want your child to form, you can manually add it onto their tab.

Parents can also mark when a child has lost progress in a particular area. For example, if a child is not showing kindness to a sibling, the parent can mark that instance as a “red flag” for the week. This negatively impacts the number of points that child has earned and they will need to work to  rectify the situation.

Rewards can also be earned either individually or as a family. Each child can see how many points they have individually earned as well as what they have contributed to the family reward.

The app also has a calendar feature where each child can see that they need to accomplish for the upcoming week(s).

FamJam helps kids practice and improve the following skills:

Self-Control: Managing our actions, feelings and behaviors.

In order to earn points for individual and family rewards, the child using the app needs to be able to use their self-control skills. Maintaining good behavior, sticking to routines, and completing chores before playing can be difficult for children, especially if the systems and routines put into place are brand new. FamJam takes these systems and makes them fun by allowing children to work their way towards goals and to also see times where they fell short of the expectation. This app combined with scaffolding created by the adults in the house can help model positive self-control techniques.

Time Management: Being efficient and aware of our use of time and effort.

Chore and task management apps are also a great way for younger children to learn about time management and the scheduling of tasks for their upcoming week. The calendar function of the app allows for each child to see what they need to accomplish and on what day. They can also add their own habits and goals as they become more independent and have grown in their understanding of how long it takes them to accomplish certain tasks.
