In the game, players take control of a range of characters from the Indiana Jones films. Each character has unique abilities that offer a particular advantage over the game's various challenges. Some areas require a certain action from a specific character in order to be completed, while other parts of the game can be beaten in a variety of ways. By remaining flexible and experimenting with the characters, players can discover new solutions for the numerous environmental puzzles presented in the game. If players don't try out different tactics and characters, they will likely find themselves frequently getting stuck.

Players collect objects or tools throughout the game, and while they may not have an immediate use, they will likley become beneficial later on in the game. Many aspects of the game demand the use of previously acquired objects, so it's important for players to recall their inventory, brainstorming ways items can be used to help them progress. Additionally, it is important for players to recall the unique abilities of each character while playing. Certain puzzles demand a specific skill, such as reading hieroglyphics. Players must recall which character has that particular skill, switching to that character to complete the task at hand (in this example, translating the text). Players will not be able to go far in the game before memorizing the unique abilities each character has to offer.
