ClipChat is a video-chatting app designed to allow users to send short personalized video clips to friends and family members via an internet or mobile connection. Users are given five seconds to shoot a personalized video complete with sound and additional options, such as text overlay, or they may send still images. Videos are completely private between the sender and receiver and will automatically disappear after they have been viewed by the recipient. Users can send images and videos to any of their ClipChat “friends,” which can be added from Facebook, Twitter, or even a contacts list from a mobile device. Users are required to create a free ClipChat account with a valid email address. The application is easy to use for quick video and image correspondance; however, videos can occasionally contain inappropriate references or materials and as with all forms of social media, parents are encouraged to monitor their child’s usage. ClipChat is therefore recommended to any user ages 12 and up.
Developing a systematic approach for setting and achieving goals.
ClipChat operates on a strictly enforced time limit of five seconds per video. Because of the limited amount of time users will have to film, they must exercise the Planning skill when thinking about and deciding what their filmed content will look and sound like. Whether shooting video of a friend doing a skateboard trick, or simply a video of family member waving hello, users must develop a plausible strategy for recording content within a very limited amount of time. This form of short-term planning makes it easy for children to understand how taking a few small steps towards preparation can help create higher-quality pieces of work -- a notion easily transferable to small-scale classwork.
Being efficient and aware of our use of time and effort.
ClipChat can help users exercise the Time Management thinking skill. Videos are shot in five second segments as indicated by a timer on the screen during recording sessions. Applying a time constraint forces users to manage their filming wisely. In addition, ClipChat can help users become accustomed to working under the pressure of time contraints. Practicing managing emotions and impulses while working against the clock is part of exercising and developing a strong Time Management thinking skill.
