In this game, players follow Professor Layton and his young apprentice Luke on their journey to the mysterious village of St. Mystere. Hired by the wealthy Reinhold family to locate a hidden treasure, Layton and Luke must work their way through numerous brainteasers, riddles, and puzzles in order to crack the case. By exploring the village and talking with its inhabitants, players are introduced to new puzzles, which must be solved in order to advance the story. The game features no blood or sexual content, but the plot revolves around an unseen murder mystery. Due to the mild violence and the game’s challenging mathematical and word-based puzzles, Professor Layton and the Curious Village is recommended for players ages 9 and up.

This Game is Good for Kids Who Need Help With:

Focus

Getting started and then maintaining attention and effort to tasks.

Professor Layton and the Curious Village revolves around brainteasers, many of which are quite challenging, so good Focus skills are key to piecing together puzzles and solving the game's advanced world problems. Sometimes players will need to work on a puzzle for extended amounts of time, trying out different solutions, practicing trial-and-error tactics and even taking notes to come up with the correct answer. Paying close attention to visuals sometimes garners clues, and deducing solutions takes persistence and motivation to complete. Inattentive players that fail to pick up on clues, or do not closely follow instructions will struggle to piece together the game's mysteries.

Self-Control

Adapting and adjusting to changing conditions and expectations.

Many of the puzzles in Professor Layton and the Curious Village are quite difficult and will require more than one attempt to complete. There are Hint Coins hidden throughout the game, which allow players to unlock up to three hints for each puzzle. Players who use a lot of Hint Coins on early puzzles may become inextricably stuck on later, more difficult ones. It is important, therefore, that players learn to use Hint Coins only when absolutely necessary, resisting the urge to "give in" too easily. Additionally, getting stumped often can become aggravating, so players will need to remain calm and control their emotions in order to stay focused and crack the case.

Organization

Arranging and coordinating materials in order to complete a task.

The various puzzles found in this game require players to develop a systematic approach to problem solving. Some puzzles may require players to keep a list, or scribble down clues in order to reach a conclusion, with the more complex puzzles requiring diligent accounting of trial-and-error. By taking well-organized notes, the game's challenging puzzles become much more manageable.

Working Memory

Recalling and retaining information in our minds while working.

Some of the later puzzles in Professor Layton and the Curious Village build upon earlier ones, adding an extra layer of challenge while retaining elements of the original puzzles. This encourages players to remember the mechanics of each type of puzzle they encounter, recalling this information as they practice and repeat the same problem-solving processes. Players who can remember the solutions to earlier, simpler puzzles can use that knowledge later on to help them solve the more complex iterations the game eventually poses.
