SSX is the an extreme snowboarding game that lets players choose a rider from a cast of snowboarders, and compete to earn money by racing down various mountains around the globe. Aside from racing for first place, players can also compete in trick contests and complete specific challenges. By successfully completing tricks, players build their “TRICKY” bar, which can be used to activate speed boosts that are crucial for winning races. In addition to regular snowboarding, players can also use a winged suit to fly between jumps, or leap from a helicopter allowing open air boarding. During this endless freefall, they are free to practice their tricks. The game can also be experienced online, allowing players to compete with friends and other racers around the globe. Little reading needed to understand the game, and there is no violence besides crashes, which feature no blood. But, the soundtrack and character commentary has some mild language. Due to these factors, SSX is recommended to players ages 10 and up.

This game is good for kids who need help with:

Working Memory

Recalling and retaining information in her mind while working.

This game forces players to remember certain tracks and tricks while racing. Each track has a distinct layout that offers different jumps, grind rails, and obstacles. Players will need remember where everything is in order to race through the fastest, or accumulate the most points by hitting the right jumps. Players will also need to remember the correct procedures to do tricks. Each trick requires a different movement from the joystick, so players must memorize these specific movements and be able to use them while playing.

Flexibility

Adapting and adjusting to changing conditions and expectations.

This game also helps kids practice their Flexibility skills as players compete in tackle courses and modes that demand different approaches and strategies. Players will need to compete in both races and trick contests, with races requiring players to finish fastest and trick contests requiring them to take it slow and perform tricks. Also, players are encouraged to use a variety of tricks instead of just one. If players keep repeating the same tricks in a row, their score will be penalized. Using a variety of moves bolsters your score, so the key to getting the most points in SSX is to switch between a variety of tricks.

Self -Control

Managing our actions, feelings, and behaviors. Improving impulse control.

This game also demands decent Self-Control skills, as players must resist the impulse to always prolong their tricks for max points. Holding out tricks results in more points, but not releasing them in time results in crashes that erase the score. If the player does not release the trick at the right moment, he will crash, and lose both time and points. Players must also control their urge to always use up their TRICKY meter. If the player uses too many speed boosts, he will not be able to build the meter to the maximum, and unleash his rider's Signature Tricks. These tricks earn the player the most points possible, and can only be accessed when the TRICKY meter is full.
