Sling Smash takes the fantasy adventure genre and puts it into a casual arcade style interface. The player is in charge of a round fox-like knight. He or she must pull back and release the character (in a sling-like fashion) to move forward through the dungeon. Along the way, the player will avoid obstacles (such as columns and bombs) and smash into pots, monsters, and coins  At the end of every dungeon—or level—the player finds a treasure chest and receives additional coin.

The player can earn achievements, as well as complete challenges (like defeat 15 enemies) for coin. Coin is used to upgrade gear and buy new characters.

Sling Smash has in-app ads and purchases. The ESRB rated it E10+ for mild or infrequent or mild fantasy or cartoon violence. The game is relatively mild in this regard, but does have a mass of creepy dark, multi-eyed tentacles that sneak up behind the player if they move too slow. LW4K stands by this rating.

Sling Smash helps kids practice and improve the following skills:

Sling SmashFocus

Getting started and then maintaining attention and effort to tasks.

The player has to pay attention to things like moving objects, a swarm of eyes chasing them, and what path they have to take to get the most coins without getting hurt or stopped by an immovable object. This means that they need to use their focus skills. Since each level is relatively short—only a minute or two long—they will be using short-term focus skills. In order to be successful in this game, it is also important that they ignore internal and external distractions so that they don’t accidentally sling their character into a bomb or a hole. They also need to get started and keep moving or the mass of tentacles and eyes will catch them.

Time Management

Being efficient and aware of our use of time and effort.

This game also requires the player to keep pace and manage their time. If they don’t keep pace with the moving objects, such as enemies and some bombs, they will sling their knight right into them. When this happens, the knight will die and the player will have to start the level over. If they spend too much time chasing after pots and enemies, the eyes will catch them. Either way, not finishing a level means fewer coins and fewer upgrades.
