Kids love YouTube, but the popular website’s vast array of video content isn’t always appropriate for young children. That’s what makes the recent arrival of the YouTube Kids app so exciting. With entertainment, educational, and music video offerings from PBS, Dreamworks, Nickelodeon, National Geographic Kids, the Toronto Zoo, KidzBop, Mother Goose Club, and even YouTube sensations Kid President and Lil Bub, parents can feel much more comfortable in the knowledge that their children are accessing age-appropriate content in a safe space built just for them. With an in-app timer, the ability to turn off search (and thereby eliminate any chance of wandering into non-kids YouTube space), and a place to leave feedback, YouTube Kids is as parent-friendly as it is kid-friendly. YouTube Kids does feature intermittent advertisements, though its advertising guidelines stipulate that ads aren’t clickable, are skippable, and cannot be about dating and relationships, health and beauty, food and beverage, politics, or other mature subjects. Taking YouTube Kids’ strict approach to advertising and its additional safety features into consideration, we feel comfortable recommending the app for use by children 4 and up.

YouTube Kids puts its entertaining videos up front on the home screen, but the app is also a great place to learn in a kid-friendly environment. Science, reading, math, and foreign languages are just a few of the channel genres to choose from. Kids who struggle with focus have difficulty sitting still and paying attention to the task at hand. YouTube Kids challenges children’s ability to focus while its carefully curated content offers opportunities for learning in an engaging format.

Time Management

YouTube Kids’ in-app timer is a great feature that enables parents to set screen time limits for their kids. Additionally, it can be used to exercise children’s time management skills. Videos range from 22-minute episodes of popular kids’ shows to 4-5 minute clips. A child who is allowed a set number of minutes per day to use the app will need to choose which videos she wants to watch relatively quickly, and make sure the lengthier ones fit her allotted screen time.
