Shonen Jump is an app that allows the user to access and read manga comic books using their mobile devices and online. The user creates a Shonen Jump account and is then able to browse through lists of available manga that have been translated into English.
When the user selects a manga series that they want to try, they click on it and can read the free chapters or pay for a subscription to unlock the whole series. For parents, Shonen Jump has created a rating system for each manga based on what age-levels each series is appropriate for. If the user wants to check a series out later, they can click on the heart icon to add it to their Favorites list. Manga can also be downloaded to read at a later date.
Shonen Jump is recommended for users 12 and over on both the Apple and Google store. However, some manga on the app is rated by Shonen Jump as being appropriate for all ages. Check the app and the manga series to ensure that it is age-appropriate for your child.
Focus: Getting started and then maintaining attention and effort to tasks.
For users who struggle with focusing, particularly when it comes to reading, apps like Shonen Jump can help. By providing reading experiences that are not only interesting and coupled with illustrations, the digital aspect of the app allows for the user to swipe when they are done with a page. This may make reading less daunting and allow the user to practice focusing on silent, self-sustained reading for longer periods of time. Coupled with other types of reading practice, manga apps like Shonen Jump can create a sense of “buy-in” for reluctant readers and help build their focusing skills over time.
Flexibility: Trying something new.
Shonen Jump allows the user of the app to read the first few chapters of most of their manga for free. This allows the user to browse the selection and try out a couple of different types of manga to see what interests them. If the user has a subscription to the site, they are able to choose from over 15,000 volumes spread across many different genres of manga. So if your child has finished a series, encourage them to branch out and try a different type of story or a new author.
