Oh No Fractions! is an iOS app in which users practice how to compare, add, subtract, multiply, and divide fractions. Users are first presented with a pair of fractions, and are then told to do things like find a common denominator, add up sums, or discern which fraction is larger than the other. For visual aid, two vertical bars sit in the middle of the screen, meant to visually represent the fraction. Users can adjust a slider to change the representation of the value (for example, 4/6 can be change to 8/12 or 12/18) — useful for finding common denominators between different fractions. Once a common denominator is found, the fractions can then be added, subtracted, divided or multiplied, depending on the mode. Although the app does not supply extended solutions to incorrect answers, users are notified if they are wrong and will receive another chance to solve the equation. It is a fairly one-dimensional app, but great for practicing fractions, which is an area of math in which many kids struggle. Assuming users are familiar with fractions and the corresponding terminology, Oh No Fractions! is recommended for children ages 6 and older.

this app is good for kids who need help with:

Flexibility

Adapting and adjusting to changing conditions and expectations.

Although the app deals specifically with fractions, there are a variety of formats in which Oh No Fractions! presents such a singular subject. Users should practice all the different fraction activities -- even if they feel they have mastered one. A mixed and varied use of the addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, and comparison practice questions will make users flexible thinking math students. Users must employ different problems solving strategies when shifting between different types of questions. For example, when adding or subtracting fractions, finding a common denominator is necessary. On the other hand, multiplying fractions does not require this first step. Your child should recognize the different ways in which fractions are solved, and apply the appropriate problem solving method.

Focus

Getting started and then maintaining attention and effort to tasks.

It is important for users to work on an activity until it is complete. In Oh No Fractions! users are advised not to give up when they struggle to solve a problem. While the app does not offer explanations for all questions, users will be promoted when they have answered correctly or incorrectly, and the slider bars offer unique visual help that makes it easier to contextualize the mathematics at play. The point of the app is to present fractions in a new, easily understandable game, so to ensure the lessons are transferred out of the app and into the classroom  it is important for users to remain attentive and concentrate closely on the connections between fraction that the app presents.

Mathematics

Oh No Fractions! deals directly with math computation, or users' ability to do simple operations. They will be practicing foundational fraction skills that will allow them to understand more difficult math concepts later on. Users can choose the "show me" option if they cannot correctly answer a question. "Show me" only presents users with the correct answer -- not with an explanation, so if users cannot understand how the answer was arrived at they would be best served doing additional research and retrying the questions at a later time.
