Memrise is a language learning app where fun interactive videos expose you to spoken language immediately. Watch a video where a speaker goes over a few phrases at a time. The text and the literal translation as well as the English equivalent will appear below the video. Once you are confident you can move on, Memrise will test your knowledge of the phrases you have just learned. Vocabulary lists categorized by topic can also be accessed for studying. Set your language learning goals and receive notifications each day reminding you to practice.
Languages offered are: Mexican Spanish, Spanish, French, German, Japanese (Kanji), Italian, Korean, Chinese, Portuguese, Russian, Arabic, Dutch, Swedish, Norwegian, Polish, Turkish, Danish, and English.
The Memrise app and its basic features are free to use but additional services can be unlocked by subscribing to the app’s service.
Because this app requires reading and writing in both the user’s native and target language, this app may not be appropriate for younger students who cannot yet read and write.
Working Memory: Remembering and using what they have heard to complete a task.
Students interact with vocabulary and videos of native speakers and then are asked to answer questions regarding what they have just learned. Students will need to keep the vocabulary and phrases in their working memory in order to successfully complete the lessons. If they are struggling with this, they may repeat the lessons multiple times until they feel comfortable enough to move on.
Focus: Getting started and then maintaining attention and effort to tasks.
Memrise helps students set their language learning goals and then guides them through these lessons with interactive videos and games. Students can practice their focus skills by completing these lessons for the duration they have committed to. Students can start with a small amount of time and work their way up to more time as their focus skills improve.
