Meet Heckerty is an engaging reading app designed specifically for younger readers. Heckerty, a tough-luck witch and her cat Zanzibar, take readers through their journey, in an interactive and colorful narrative. Users can choose to read at their own pace or opt to have Heckerty read her tale to them. And if users are unfamiliar with any of the vocabulary, they can simply click on that word, and Heckerty will read it to them. Each page has its own specific animation, which once clicked, will move humorously. Only one story is available in the free version of the app, but it should provide language learners with plenty of practice, as they can go back to the beginning of the story, and read it until they reach fluency. Meet Heckerty features no inappropriate content and is recommended for children ages 4 to 7, and provides a great foundation for furthering their skills in phonics, phonemic awareness, vocabulary, and fluency.
As digital technology becomes all the more present in children's daily lives, it's important that they can demonstrate sustained attention in activities like reading and writing. Meet Heckerty helps make reading fun, as it holds user's interest throughout the duration of the narrative. Because the app allows users to interact with the text and images, it creates a interactive and engaging atmosphere allowing users to develop a more positive association with reading. Users should try to finish the entire story each time they read, fostering their goal-directed persistence skills and making them more cognizant of each facet of the story
Because there is only one story that's available to read, users will quickly become quite familiar with the nature of the Heckerty's story. For the working memory thinking skill, this is a good thing. Users can go back a page at a time or to the beginning of the story entirely in order to glean something new from the narrative. Users should begin by having Heckerty narrate the story to them. Once they have finished, they should go back and try to read the story on their own -- out loud. When they stumble across a word they are unfamiliar with, users simply click on it and the narration pronounces it for them. Users who try to commit the word to memory either by saying it out loud or using it in a sentence will soon have a larger vocabulary and a highly active working memory.
Although Meet Heckerty is geared toward younger readers; more specifically, readers who are just getting more familiar with the English language. The app not only works to introduce readers to the excitement of reading, but it helps them learn at the same time. Expanding vocabulary, increasing reading fluency, and helping users adjust to reading silently are just a few of the many benefits of engaging with Meet Heckerty.
