Letter School is a fun app designed to help young children learn letters and develop their handwriting skills. Users learn capital and lowercase letters, as well as the basics of the numeral system. The app provides a large visual representation of letters, drawing them out on-screen and tasking users to track the outline, following a prompt which demonstrates the order in which the letters should be written. It is a fairly simple app with limited functionality, but great for children who are starting to learn their numbers and letters. The app contains no inappropriate material, but it’s narrow scope makes it recommended for use with children ages 2-6.

this app is good for kids who need help with:

Focus

Getting started and then maintaining attention and effort to tasks.

mzl.trlfqqkv.320x480-75Users must pay careful attention to the app's demonstration. When they are tasked with tracing the outline of the letter, which for example is "C," users must being at the top right point, making a counterclockwise semi circle motion with their finger. When the letter is traced properly, a fun animation will accopany their swipe which lets users know if they are making the right motion. But if users start tracing from the bottom of the "C," they will recieve no animation and will not be able to move on the the next letter. Those who wish to learn the whole alphabet must concentrate on the example to avoid incorrectly drawing the letter on a whim.

Working Memory

Recalling and retaining information in our mind while working.

Ideally, users will be able to apply what they learned in Letter School Lite directly into the classroom. This transference or "generalization" only occurs when users understand that what they are learning in the game can be applied in the real world setting. Because there are only so many letters in the alphabet and numbers in the numerical system, users will encounter the same questions frequently if they use the app consistently. The second or third time around, users might not need to watch the tutorial, as the drawing motion should come naturally - a product of muscle memory. Although the app is simple, it is highly useful, especially for young learners who need a little extra reinforcement when it comes to writing letters.

Reading & Writing

Letter School is an app designed for children just begin to learn about letters and sounds. The app shows large animations of letters, tasking users with drawing them out, and also shows letters being used within words accompanied by an image. These simple exercises are designed to help early learners develop the skills necessary to recognize letter shapes and their corresponding sounds. Phonics and phonological awareness are the building blocks of reading, and the app's focus on writing letters out also helps set kids on their way to writing out words themselves. Users will exercise the fine motor skills that are required to write correctly simply by spending a few minutes a day with Letter School Lite.
