GEIST is an app that features both brain-training exercises and mindfulness exercises. The user signs up for the app, takes a short survey on what they would like to improve and then plays a series of games targeted to these skills. GEIST has games to help improve memory, focus, mathematical skills, concentration, and reaction time. After you play a game, the app will score you and provide you with information about your progress.

Each day that you log in, the game provides you with a “Workout” that you can complete to earn points. This workout consists of several games that address the different skills. For example, for memory, you can play a game called Matching Pairs where you are trying to match shapes on flashcards. However, the cards will occasionally swap, making it harder to remember where they were located.

The app also features exercises in guided meditation and sleep assistance. The user can specify what they want to get out of each experience and then the app will provide talks for this this subject.

GEIST is an app which requires a subscription service. It is available now on iOS.

GEIST helps kids practice and improve the following skills:

Working Memory: Recalling and retaining information in our minds while working.

Many of the games that are available to play on GEIST deal with improving the user’s working memory. There are games where you are matching tiles once they are flipped over, remembering the order of items on a shelf, or remembering the order of colored lights on a grid. For players who struggle with working memory, this app can be a good way to practice this skill a little at a time. Each day you can complete your workout which will include a memory game. But then you can go on to play additional memory games if you would like to get some extra practice.

Focus: Getting started and then maintaining attention and effort to tasks.

There are games on GEIST that are specifically designed to improve your focus and concentration. For example, the game Signs in the Sky presents a bunch of differently colored shapes and asks the user to find the shape that doesn’t have a match on the screen. The user needs to focus and eliminate the matched shapes quickly while searching for the odd shape and clicking on it. As the levels progress, more shapes with similar patterns are added, making it harder to focus.

The guided meditation and sleep portions of the app can also help the user with focus. Each talk is short, helping users who struggle with focus practice this skill in a short and sustained manner.
