Crayola Colorful Creatures is an app for preschool aged children where they can explore colors, animals, and play fun games to help them learn focusing skills. When the app is first opened, the child sees a colorless globe but as they play through the various games and learn about different animals, the globe begins to fill in with color. Some of these games involve coloring, matching, creating new colors for creatures, etc. Each game is short and is preceded by a photo of the animal as well as some facts about it in real life.
Some of the activities are free to try within the app but purchasing the full version is required to unlock all 20 creatures and their corresponding games. The app is currently available on Android and iOS.
The activities in the Colorful Creatures app allow for creativity and can build up early flexibility skills. For example, the elephant activity asks the child to color in the elephant but does not tell them what colors they need to use. The child can make a creature all their own by trying new colors to see which they like best.
Focus: Getting started and then maintaining attention and effort to tasks.
Preschool game apps are a great way for younger children to practice their focusing skills because the games and activities tend to be short and sustained. This way the child can build up this skill by starting small and gradually working their way to longer periods of focusing on tasks. For example, the Leopard Frog activity has children looking at certain colored flies to see which ones they need to catch for the frog. If they are not focused they will not be able to find the correct color for him to eat. The game only lasts for three short rounds, meaning the child is practicing flexibility within a range that is age-appropriate.
