iTrace is a handwriting app that aims to tech children basic phonics and writing skills. Using the touch screen, kids learn how to trace letters and sound them out, and can practice writing out uppercase and lowercase letters. Users can learn how to spell their own name, and can unlock four words for each letter of the alphabet. Additional word packs can be purchased, and cover scenes such as a farm, the beach and the circus. A voice-over speaks all letters and words out loud, helping kids learn proper pronunciation. A number pack can also be purchased to teach kids how to write and say numbers zero through nine. The app is geared to young children, and is perfect for early learners. We recommend use of the app with children ages 2-6.
Getting started and then maintaining attention and effort to tasks.
Learning how to form letters requires practice, and iTrace offers an easy-to-follow method for children to hone their handwriting skills. Following the demonstration, users can trace within the outlines provided, and should, over time, learn how to create each letter correctly and legibly. Staying within the lines and outlining each letter won't come easy, but with persistent practice kids can eventually become adept at drawing out each letter of the alphabet. Repetition also provides a simple way of increasing users’ writing fluency and ability to associate letters with sounds. The corresponding word section helps them piece together these sounds with associated images. Regular use of iTrace will ensure young learners are well-versed in grade-level writing and phonics.
Recalling and retaining information in our mind while working.
Eventually, users must be able to apply what they learn in iTrace outside of the app. Practicing writing numbers and letters within the app offers a fun way for children to internalize e the shapes and sounds of numbers and letters, with the goal being for them to eventually memorize this information and put it to use when reading and writing. Developing the motor skills and muscle memory needed to write fluently comes with practice, and by associating letters with sounds, words and images withing the app, kids can build their working memory of the alphabet and learn to apply that knowledge with real world reading and writing.
iTrace is designed for early learners, and is perfect for kids just starting to learn about letters, numbers and sounds. The voice-over feature models proper pronunciation by narrating sounds out loud, while the outlines guide them on how to properly write out numbers and letters. The additional words and images provided offer simple reading exercises that help kids apply the basic letters and sounds they have learned into larger words, giving them some practice at basic reading and phonological awareness.
